HOW DOES ACUPUNCTURE WORK?

Acupuncture is an evidence based healthcare system used all over the world. It is an holistic and individualised treatment, designed to work on your whole body, not just your symptoms.

When imbalances and disharmony in the body occurs, meridian channels and nerve pathways that run throughout the body become blocked due to the brain sending incorrect messages to your body’s systems, such as your hormones, reproductive system and digestive system, resulting in system dysfunction. By inserting fine, sterile single use needles into specific points on these pathways, Acupuncture will send messages to the brain to help unblock and correct some of these imbalances, thus helping to build strong, healthy foundations for your hormonal and fertility.

THERe are many acupuncturists in the area. What makes you different?

Most degree - level trained acupuncturists, have covered some basic fertility concepts during their main qualification training alongside study into other general conditions and as such may offer generalised fertility and menstrual cycle support.

Since completing my undergraduate studies in Acupuncture and Naturopathy, I have remained passionate about supporting fertility and women’s health and as such, have undertaken numerous post graduate study (CPD) in many areas including female fertility, IVF, male fertility, miscarriage, hormonal health, pregnancy and menopause. I am a registered member of The Acupuncture Fertility Network and I am currently undertaking ‘The Advanced Level Diploma in Fertility’ by The Fertility Support Training education company, which is considered the gold standard in Acupuncture training for advanced fertility, gynaecology, and obstetrics study.

My qualifications in both Chinese Medicine Acupuncture and Naturopathy, has allowed me to create a very unique offering to my clients - bringing together specialist knowledge and clinical experience in both these disciplines into the clinic space, in order to really help support my patient’s health journey with a fully integrated 360 approach.

How many treatments will I need?

Acupuncture is an holistic treatment, tailored to each individual client. The number of treatments needed will depend on the complexity of the patient’s case history, whether further investigations/western medical treatment is needed and patient’s individual response to treatment. The effects and success of treatment are cumulative, which means regular sessions timed to the different hormonal cycle stages are important. In order to help us reach our desired goals, those seeking fertility, IVF support, gynaecology or specific women’s and hormonal health support, should consider a minimum of 3 months worth of regular weekly treatment will generally be required - though this can vary, patient to patient depending on individual case factors.

Please visit the fertility section of my website for further support.

Preparation is key to maximising the IVF success potential. Research suggests that spending at least 3 months preparing before your IVF cycle commences, addressing health concerns that may be a contributing factor with nutrition, acupuncture, lifestyle changes and supplementation for both men and women, can help improve your chances of favourable outcomes.

If your cycle is due to start sooner, don’t worry, acupuncture will still be helpful. My individualised treatments and support during assisted fertility treatment, are aimed at helping to balance the emotional rollercoaster that is IVF, as well as supporting your body through the side effects of the IVF medication.

*Typical no of treatments during the actual IVF cycle (excluding any preparatory time) ranges from 6 - 9 treatments, carefully timed with your IVF treatment schedule/scans/blood tests.

I’m CONSIDERING IVF, HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT Me?

Is acupuncture safe?

According to research, traditional acupuncture is regarded as a safe therapy, when practised by fully trained, qualified, licensed acupuncturist. All members of the AAC are required to undertake the highest quality of training and follow strict codes of safe acupuncture practice, professional conduct and hygiene standards. Acupuncture is suitable for all ages and those who are seeking pregnancy acupuncture, however there are some specific health conditions in which acupuncture may not be suitable. This includes those who wear pacemakers. If you’re unsure whether you are able to receive acupuncture please do not hesitate to contact Samina.

I’m nervous of needles - DOES IT HURT?

Acupuncture needles are very fine – they have a thickness of a strand of hair, so for a vast majority of people won’t feel them being inserted. After insertion, you will typically experience a sensation of a mild tingle or dull ache as the needle is adjusted to the required depth. For many, an acupuncture treatment can be deeply relaxing. Possible mild side effects include mild bruising when the needle is removed. Post treatment, most clients report feeling very relaxed or energised. Very rarely, people may experience dizziness or tiredness for a brief period of time.

Is there anything I should do before and after the treatment?

Prior to treatment, avoid any alcohol that day, eat a small meal or light snack 2 hours before treatment and keep well hydrated. Following treatment, avoid any strenuous activity or exercise, drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol.

How much do you charge?

The initial consultation and treatment is £130 (90mins). New patients are required to pay full treatment fee in advance to secure the appointment. Follow up appointments are £85 (45-60mins). Fertility and women’s health packages are also available. Please note all appointments are subject to a 48hr cancellation policy. Late cancellations or missed appointments will be chargeable in full or deducted from the package appointment allowance.

Are your treatments covered by my private health insurance?

Acupuncture treatments are covered by a number of private health insurers, but it is the client’s responsibility to investigate if they are covered by their policy. Receipts can be provided upon request. For more information please refer to AAC information on health insurance
